Ever wish you knew exactly what someone was thinking? Or maybe you just wish you could remember everyone's name right after they say it? Well, get ready, because today, the world's leading mentalist, Oz Pearlman, is sharing his secrets!
He is a super smart guy who walked away from Wall Street to become a mentalist. His whole job is to make people believe he can read minds, but here is the honest truth: reading minds is impossible! Instead, he reads people by reverse engineering the human mind for three decades and focusing on small, minute details.
He teaches that the skills he uses in entertainment apply to everyone and can lead to success in your personal life, professional life, and relationships. Think of these as proven habits for success.

Oz Pearlman
The Story of the Super-Prep Kid 🧑🍳
When he was only 14 years old, Oz Pearlman talked his way into getting a gig doing magic tricks at a restaurant, having started magic when he was 13. He realized quickly that people would think: "Oh my god, is he going to be here long?" or "Do I have to tip him?".
To stop people from immediately shutting him down, he prepared in advance for everything that could go wrong. He knew he had to gain a "tactical advantage" by knowing what people were thinking when he approached them.
Here’s the first trick he learned, based on ancient human wiring: The Angle Approach!
He discovered that if he approached a table directly with two eyes, it created fear. That's because humans are hardwired from thousands of years of avoiding predators to see two eyes as danger. So, what did he do? He turned ever so slightly and approached with one eye. Approaching at an angle means they only see one eye, which signals less danger, making animals (and people!) less fearful.
He also learned to create a Positive Curiosity Gap. Instead of saying, "Hey, do you want to see me do magic?" (which makes it easy to say "No, get out of here"), he used open ended questions that generated positive energy.
He would walk up and say, "Did you hear what's going on tonight? It's your lucky day!". That gives them a little dopamine hit, just like when your phone buzzes. He then tells them: "The owner brought me in as a special treat to do something amazing for you". This gives them no point to say no, shows he works there (social currency), and tells them they don't have to pay him. He does this all in less than 10 seconds—that's a master hook!.
🛠️ Tool #1: The Fast Track to Confidence and No Fear!
The number one thing that keeps people from success is the fear of rejection. Most people don't try to achieve their goals because they are fearful of failing.
The mentalist has two great tricks for eliminating that fear:
The Tomorrow Trick: If you have something you really dread doing, like making a difficult phone call 📞 or delivering bad news, trick your brain. Ask yourself: "What will I feel like tomorrow about this?". He suggests doing the thing now and setting an alarm for 24 hours later. Most of the time, the next day, you will feel nothing about it, maybe a 2 or 3 out of 10, even if the dread felt like an 8, 9, or 10 beforehand. If you can rewire your brain to know you'll feel nothing tomorrow, you'll just say, "Screw it, I'm going to do it now".
The Invisible Plastic Barrier: When he got turned down or rejected, it used to hurt his feelings. To stop that pain, he created two separate personalities in his mind: "Oz Pearlman the entertainer" and "Oz Pearlman the real guy". If someone didn't like his trick, he’d tell himself: "They didn't like the entertainer, that's a different guy, that’s not me". Think of it like a bowl of water with salt. If you can put an invisible piece of plastic down the middle, you can pour salt (the pain) on one side, and the other side (the real you) stays fresh water and is immune. Getting over the fear of rejection is a superpower in life.
🧠 Tool #2: The Superpower of Memory (Lather, Rinse, Reply!)
Memory is a superpower because no one expects you to have it anymore. Think about how many times you meet someone, shake their hand, and immediately forget their name. Then, you can't even enjoy the conversation because you're in dread.
The mentalist has repurposed the instructions on a shampoo bottle (Lather, Rinse, Repeat) into a powerful memory hack: Listen, Repeat, Reply.
Listen: This sounds silly, but 95% of people get this step wrong. When you hear the name, you are often thinking of what you are going to say back to them, so your brain can't read and write at the same time. You must actually listen and quiet your mind.
Repeat: Repeat the name instantly, maybe twice. For example, if you meet Steven, say, "Steven, is it Steve or Steven?". You've now said the name three times, dramatically lowering your chance of forgetting it.
Reply (with a hook!): Use one of these three tactics:
Spell it: Ask how they spell it: "Is it Steven with a V or a PH?".
Compliment/Visual Hook: Give a compliment and use their name: "Jacob, I love that shirt. Where did you get that V-neck?".
Connector: Find a connection: "It’s so funny, my sister is dating a guy named Stephen—small world!".
Doing this takes only about five seconds, and you will not forget their name for the rest of the party! Remembering tiny personal details like this is shockingly powerful because most people overlook them. When you remember something they told you, it's like winning the lottery for them.
💡 Tool #3: Focus on Them (Not You!)
Whether you are trying to convince your parents to let you stay out late, ask for a raise, or sell a product, the number one secret to success is this: It’s not about you, it’s always about them.
When you approach someone, don't talk about how great you are or how great your product is. Instead, ask yourself: What is this person missing?.
Mentalists listen to their audience, client, or consumer because the audience will tell you the answers to what you need to give back. He says you should use benefits oriented language and focus on what is currently bothering them or what their moments of resistance are. Just like a mentalist prepares for all the possible thoughts of the audience, you need to anticipate the rebuttals (Plan A, B, C, all the way to Z) that might keep your client from saying yes.
Remember: Your focus drives someone else’s focus. If you want to connect with people, be the most interested person in the room. Ask questions that throw them out of autopilot and let them explore who they are.
🚀 Time for Action!
The mentalist teaches that inspiration and motivation are "garbage". What truly matters is action and accountability.
He challenges you to define a quantifiable goal right now—something achievable, not a "pie in the sky" thing. Make tomorrow the first day you go after it.
If you want to be accountable, try telling 10 people you know about your goal. If you don't follow through, you will have to eat humble pie when they ask you about it later. Finding an external motivator like not wanting to be embarrassed can be a powerful lever to generate action.
Just like a tiny domino can knock over a much larger one, taking small, consistent steps and harnessing your focus on the person you are communicating with will eventually propel you to success.
